Welcome to Rivington - The home of great water...

Rivington is home to some of the most beautiful countryside in the North West. It's also the home of some of the best water, and we hope you'll help us to keep it that way. These moors and valleys collect the rainwater that ends up in taps from Wigan to Liverpool.

Upper Roddlesworth, Lower Roddlesworth, and Rake Brook reservoirs are near Brinscall, Chorley. These three feed into a channel called The Goit, which was originally an open stream but was covered over in the early 1900s to protect it from local industry and keep it clean. The Goit carries this water into Anglezarke reservoir which, along with Yarrow and High Bullough reservoirs, feeds through into Upper and Lower Rivington.

Reservoir safety

Reservoir safety

Every year, people are injured or die while swimming in reservoirs. Stay safe, stay out.

Did you know?

  • It might look like one big lake full of water, but Rivington is actually made up of a chain of eight different reservoirs.
  • Built between 1850 & 1857 they all flow down the valleys, by gravity, into the lowest and biggest reservoir Lower Rivington.
  • Together all 8 reservoirs can hold a whopping 18,000 million litres of water - that's enough to give every home in the world a bucketful!
